I'm going to stop posting these to the Creative People group for now. I figure at the rate I'm going there will be a post every other day and it will just start to annoy people. I'll just do summary posts at given milestones with links to all the previous posts.
So this is where I'm up to; I was bored and sober tonight so I decided to experiment in ways to solve the dilemma of pink = good but neutral = necessary.
First try: Just replace the pink in the content box with white.
Pros: Colour scheme remains largely unchanged, lots of lovely pink to look at still, no need to add new colours that could muddy things up. Having white directly next to the image will eliminate problems of colours clashing.
Cons: Still very bloody bright. While the image area may be surrounded by white the pink still dominates and still distracts from the image.
Pros: Even less chance of colours clashing. Still retain a good deal of yummy pinkness.
Cons: Lots of dull grey which lessens the overall impact of the site. The grey doesn't exactly fit seamlessly into the colour scheme so it looks a bit muddy. Might work with grey behind the circles in the header.
Pros: At least I get to keep my nice bright green (which is allegedly the web colour of the moment and my attempt to be at least semi-fashionable). The colour scheme works well now. The overall grey tones mean that the images aren't overwhelmed.
Cons: No pink.
Pros: Got my pink back! The pink works well for the ribbon/seal/star thingie.
Cons: I don't know what the hell I was thinking when I decided to experiment with 3D stars. I was going to immediately scrap them, but figured I'd post it and see if everyone agrees with me that they look crap. Other con: now I miss the green.
What is your home decorating style, and how has it changed over time? Do you have plans to redecorate?

Hahahaha. Cheap. That's the only way to sum up my decorating style. Why? Because I have no money, and having been a student for the last six years, I have had no money for quite a while and look like having no money for some time to come. Some would prefer to call it 'thrifty chic' - a term which I would happily adopt if there was indeed anything chic about my furniture. Sadly that is not the case, so I live in what looks like an explosion in the back room of an op shop.
Am I planning to redecorate? In the unlikely event of winning lotto, perhaps. Otherwise, no. We have enough cheap crap in our flat. There's no need to add any more cheap crap to it.
This leads me to an interesting fact: I studied design. I have lots of friends who are designers. We all learned about minimalism and know how to make things look good. Yet every designer I know lives in a cluttered whore-house of junk that is as woefully mismatched as it is outdated - and that's both students and professionals. I'm not sure why that is. Possibly because we're like bower birds; except we don't just collect random objects, we form emotional bonds with them, making it impossible to throw them out or relegate them to a lesser position out of sight. All our precious things must be on display all the time, otherwise how would people know about all our cool stuff??? Or it could just be that we're all designed out by the time we get home. After a hard day making everything look incredibly good it's nice to curl up on a tatty couch and leave your stuff where it lies and just let go of all the designerly pressure. Or maybe we're lazy. I'll definitely put my hand up to the last option. Lazy and Cheap. It could be the Next Big Thing in interior design, you just wait.
I was having a conversation with an old schoolmate from TAFE (college) the other day, complaining about a client who just didn't want to write more content for her website even though she was a writer and it was her portfolio site. I mean, a writer should be able to get off their arse and write, shouldn't they?
... Right. Sort of like, as a designer I should be able to finally getting around to redesigning my folio site, shouldn't I?
Um. Yeah.
My friend agreed. She's a budding web designer and hasn't even got a site running yet.
Oops.
So we decided to get off our arses and do what we had to do. And knowing that I only work when deadlines are involved I set us a deadline. We have to have rough designs by 9.00 am Monday April 30. No exact number, but I'm aiming for three. And since this blog (used to) be like a creative journal for me I'm planning on documenting my progress here.
Then I wondered if anyone in the Vox community is like me - wanting to be creative, but getting side-tracked and thinking 'well, I'll do it eventually' and never getting to it. If you're like me and you need a deadline to get anything done, feel free to join in! Whether it's designing a website, creating a sculpture or writing a short story just tell us what you're going to get done and when you're getting it done by and share your progress with us.
Deadlines are FUN!
(Or as Douglas Adams famously said "I love deadlines. I like the whooshing sound they make as they fly by.")
Thank Jeebus, I've finally finished my part of the group project. My comic is finished, I've done the illustration for the storybook section, the illustration of the luck-child and a self-portrait for the webpage. Now all that remains is to print and put up the posters, to do the presentation and do the documentation. But that can all wait for a week, so my part - for now - is done.
Now I have to go on to UV maps though. Which are far worse than illustration. Especially since I'm painting bloody feathers. Hundreds of 'em. *Shudder*
